Drew Petersen makes his Central Indiana Concerto debut as the 2017 APA/Christel DeHaan Classical Fellow when he joins the Carmel Symphony Orchestra for this very special evening. As the winner of the prestigious and rigorous 13-month long competition, Drew Petersen will serve as Artist-in-Residence at University of Indianapolis for the next two years. In an auspicious young career, Petersen has been a prizewinner in the Leeds International Piano Competition, the Hilton Head International Piano Competition, the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Competition and the New York Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, among others. At age 5, he performed at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall and by age 10 performed a solo recital at Steinway Hall in Manhattan for the company’s 150th Anniversary.
The concert begins with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture. Perhaps less known than his Fifth Symphony, but popular, especially among musicians. Similar is the pace of Weber’s “Invitation to the Dance” which was written as a concert waltz – a waltz more for listening than actual dancing, although the ballet, “Le Spectre de la Rose” was choregraphed to it. Zack programmed 20th Century composer Paul Hindemith’s “Symphonic Metamorphosis,” based on the themes of Weber’s compositions. But undoubtedly, the piece de resistance for Petersen’s talents is Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1.
